Ariana Fenty (born Ariana Jean Hudson; June 18, 1982) is an American singer, songwriter and actress. She is widely recognized for her versatility in music production & songwriting, and has pushed the boundaries of artistry in the music industry. After appearing in school productions and on television, she was signed to her first two labels in 1997, and debuted with her self-titled EP in August 1999 & her debut album, Oops!... I Did it Again, in August 2000, her two releases with Diamonds Records and Hendrix Entertainment. Her first Christmas album, Wrapped In Red, was then released in December 2000 as her only release with Velvet Records, After dissatisfaction with the musical direction of her first two releases, Ariana left Diamonds and Hendrix in early 2001 and signed with Blox Records and Tamla Records. She adopted a more mature image for her second and third albums, Shock Your Mind and Stronger, released in April 2001 and June 2001, respectively. She then toured in support of the albums throughout 2002 before taking a one-year hiatus from her career. Ariana returned to the music scene with her fourth and fifth albums, In The Zone and Get On The Dance Floor, released in November 2003 and January 2005, respectively, and released her first greatest hits compilation in December 2003. She toured in support of the albums in 2004 and 2005, respectively. After a second hiatus to focus on family and film roles, Ariana released an EP titled Mona Lisa in March 2006, which was viewed as a prelude to The Karma Trilogy, a trilogy of albums that spawned her sixth, seventh and eighth albums, I Am.. The Original Doll, Blackout and Reputation, released in April 2006, June 2007 and July 2007, respectively. A tour in support of the trilogy ran throughout most of 2008.

Life and career[]

1982-1996: Early life and career beginnings[]

Ariana Jean Hudson was born on June 18, 1982 in Miami, Florida, the first child of Rachel Hudson (née Tyler; born February 12, 1962) and Bryan Hudson (born August 4, 1961). Her siblings are Chad Hudson, Kelly Hudson and Emily Hudson.

As a child, Ariana expressed an interest in acting & performing, and often auditioned for school plays and entered talent shows around the U.S. Her parents, relatives and teachers described her singing voice as ethereal and a blessing. At the age of three, she began attending dance lessons in her hometown and was selected to perform as a solo artist at the annual recital. She made her local stage debut at the age of five, singing "What Child Is This?" at her kindergarten graduation. During her childhood, she also had gymnastics and voice lessons. In gymnastics, Ariana attended Béla Károlyi's training camp. She said of her ambition as a child, "I was in my own world, ... I found out what I'm supposed to do at an early age". Her first professional role was the understudy for the lead role of Tina Denmark in the off-Broadway musical Ruthless!

In 1992, at the age of ten, Ariana appeared on the television show Star Search, and scored second place in the competition. She was also cast in a number of commercials. A year later, in 1993, she was cast in the 1990s revival of The Mickey Mouse Club. The show lasted for a year before being cancelled in 1994. In 1996, at age fourteen, Ariana and her family moved to Los Angeles to pursue her dream and find a record label. She submitted her demo tape to various record labels for several months. During a performance at a karaoke club, she was discovered by American artist Ashley Jones, the president of record label Diamonds Records, who offered her a record deal, to which Ariana happily agreed.

1997-2000: Ariana Fenty EP, Oops!... I Did It Again, and Wrapped In Red[]

In the summer of 1997, at age fifteen, Ariana signed with Diamonds Records & Hendrix Entertainment, and soon began working on material for her debut album, while also adopting the stage name Ariana Fenty. She expressed interest in releasing an R&B album as her debut, and started writing & recording songs in that genre. However, to her dismay, the two labels wanted her to lean towards a teen pop/bubblegum pop sound and made it clear that the label songwriters would be writing most of the songs. During this time, Ariana was cast as Stevie Van Lowe in the television sitcom The Parkers. Miss Red, a fellow artist, also starred in the series as Kim Parker, reprising her role from Moesha. The show would last five seasons and ended on May 10, 2004. She was also in talks with her manager to join the female pop girl group Innosense, but this never materialized.

Prior to her musical breakthrough, Ariana began performing at various shopping malls in late 1998 and early 1999 as a way of introducing her to the public. She also served as the opening act to several other artists. Ariana's debut single, "...Baby One More Time", was released on September 29, 1998, and she became popular very quickly. Originally, her labels wanted the associated music video to be animated; however, she rejected this idea, and suggested the final concept of a Catholic schoolgirl. The song hit #1 on the UVboard Hot 100, and stayed there for two consecutive weeks. Before the EP's release, she embarked on her debut tour starting on June 28, 1999, which consisted of small venues and festivals. The tour was positively received by critics. It also generated some controversy due to her racy outfits. On August 12, 1999, Ariana released her self-titled debut EP, which included six tracks that she had recorded in early 1998, a year prior to its release, including "...Baby One More Time", "(You Drive Me) Crazy" and "Born To Make You Happy". Certain editions of the EP included other tracks she recorded that year, including one she had co-written titled "I'm So Curious". Her labels hoped that the EP would increase the already-rising public interest in their brand new star. In early 2000, the tour was completely revamped as an all-arena U.S tour known as the Crazy 2K Tour, which began on March 8, 2000 and ended on April 24, 2000. Ariana premiered songs from her upcoming debut album during the show.

Ariana was originally set to release the album in November 1999, but postponed it to the next year as she was exhausted from touring and she wanted to record more material for it. Ariana embarked on her third concert tour, the Oops!... I Did It Again Tour, beginning shortly before the album's release and covering North America and Europe. Finally, her highly anticipated debut album, Oops!... I Did It Again, was released on August 13, 2000. Only two songs on the album, "A Thousand Miles" and "Dear Diary", were written by Ariana. The album spawned ten singles, with the title track peaking at #4 on the UVboard Hot 100. The album later peaked at #1 on the UVboard 200, and also reached #1 in over twenty other countries. On September 7, 2000, Ariana performed at the 2000 UVTV Video Music Awards. Halfway through the performance, she ripped off her black suit to reveal a sequined flesh-colored bodysuit, followed by heavy dance routine. It is noted by critics as the moment that Ariana showed signs of becoming a more provocative performer. After her performance, Taylor Price and Cam J approached her and offered her spots in their record labels, Blox Records and Tamla Records, to which she replied that she'd consider the decision. Soon afterwards, she provided the voice of Crystal in Scooby-Doo and the Alien Invaders, and signed with Velvet Records for a short period of time before the label shut down a few weeks after she was signed. On December 6, 2000, Ariana released her first Christmas album, Wrapped In Red, her only album with Velvet.

2001-2002: New management, Shock Your Mind, and Stronger[]

In January 2001, Ariana hosted the 28th Annual American Music Awards, performed at Rock In Rio Brazil, and performed as a special guest in the Super Bowl XXXV halftime show. The following month, Ariana expressed unhappiness towards Diamonds and Hendrix for not letting her write and release songs in the musical direction that she wanted to follow, and left the two labels. Immediately after, she accepted Taylor and Cam's offers, and signed with Blox Records & Tamla Records. She also signed a $7–8 million promotional deal with Pepsi. For her next album, Ariana assumed more creative control and wanted a more mature sound than her first two releases. Ariana released her second album, Shock Your Mind, on April 7, 2001. The album's songs took a departure from the teen pop sound of her first two releases and explored a more mainstream pop and R&B sound, while also incorporating elements of hip hop, disco, rock and EDM. The album stayed at #1 for nine weeks on the UVboard 200, and spawned the #1 hits, "I'm A Slave 4 U", "Overprotected" and "Anticipating". Soon afterwards, Ariana created her own record label, Blackout Entertainment (initially called Motive Records). Two months later, on June 11, 2001, Ariana surprise-released her third album, Stronger, which incorporated a pop rock sound with elements of R&B and country.

That same month, rumors arose that Ariana was dating her MMC co-star and fellow artist Chase Roberts after the two were seen together on various occasions. The rumors were confirmed not too long after, after the two shared a kiss after performing together at 2001 Wango Tango. Ariana's performance at the 2001 UVTV Video Music Awards featured a caged tiger and a large albino python draped over her shoulders. It was harshly received by animal rights organization PETA, who claimed the animals were mistreated and scrapped plans for an anti-fur billboard that was to feature her. In October 2001, she made a cameo appearance in Longshot as a flight attendant. In March 2002, Ariana broke off her relationship with Chase after she discovered that he had cheated on her with numerous other girls. The relationship lasted about ten months. Soon after, she made her theatrical film debut in Crossroads playing the role of Lucy Wagner, and also made a cameo appearance in Austin Powers in Goldmember as herself. To support the albums, Ariana embarked on the Dream Within A Dream Tour, which began on April 25, 2002 in Oakland and concluded on August 10, 2002 in Mexico City. During the tour, she also served as one of the headliners at the 2002 Blox Records Music Festival. The tour was praised by critics and fans alike for its concept and high-tech elements. After the tour's conclusion, Ariana announced that she would be taking a one-year hiatus from music. In October 2002, Ariana played the role of Rachel Keller in the horror movie The Ring, in which her performance was praised by critics.

2003-2004: First music hiatus and In The Zone[]

In November 2002, in the midst of her one-year hiatus, Ariana began work on her fourth album. The next month, she voiced Donner in an American dub of the British television special Robbie the Reindeer. In August 2003, Ariana announced that her fourth album was titled In The Zone, and would be released near the end of the year. She later was featured as an opening act on her friend and fellow artist JYO's Do You Still Think About Me Stadium Tour in September & October 2003, where she debuted a few songs from the upcoming album live. The lead single, "Me Against The Music", was released on September 15, 2003, and featured Ariana's friend and fellow artist Victoria Balmain. The song peaked at #2 on the UVboard Hot 100. Ariana made various TV appearances to promote the song.

To celebrate the release of the upcoming album, she held an album release concert at New York City's Gotham Hall on November 11, 2003, where she performed songs from the album, as well as some of her older hits. In The Zone was then released the day after on November 12, 2003, and featured a dance-pop and electropop sound, with elements of hip hop, funk, dancehall, reggae, trance, techno and trip hop, The album was met with positive reviews, although some reviews were mixed on Ariana's vocals on some songs. The album peaked at #1 on the UVboard 200 and marked Ariana's fourth #1 album on the chart. Other hit singles from the album included "Toxic", "Frozen", "And Then We Kiss" and "Everytime", all of which peaked within the top 3 on the Hot 100; "Toxic" and "And Then We Kiss" hit #1. On December 10, 2003, Ariana released a greatest hits compilation titled Greatest Hits: My Prerogative, which featured songs from her debut EP and her first four albums, as well as five new, previously unreleased tracks.

In January 2004, she signed to Dangerous Woman Entertainment. To promote In The Zone, Ariana embarked on her fifth concert tour, The Onyx Hotel Tour, which began on February 3, 2004 in San Diego and concluded on June 5, 2004 at the Rock In Rio Lisboa festival. Some of the North American concerts of the tour had to be rescheduled after Ariana suffered an injury to her left knee during one of the shows.

The Onyx Hotel Tour was set to have a second North American leg in the summer of 2004, as well as a Latin American leg in the fall. However, in early June 2004, while filming a music video in Manhattan, Ariana suffered another injury to her left knee while performing the choreography. She was forced to remain six weeks with a thigh brace, followed by eight weeks of rehab, thus cancelling the rest of the tour. After the incident, Ariana announced another hiatus from music to focus on more film roles. Soon afterwards, Ariana played the role of Allie Calhoun in The Notebook. In September 2004, Ariana started dating Mexican-American actor Tito Lopez. The two had met at a party in Los Angeles earlier that year and both of them instantly fell for each other. The following month, she made a cameo appearance in the mockumentary comedy film, Pauly Shore is Dead. Shortly after, she released her first perfume, Curious.

2005-2007: Get On The Dance Floor, Second music hiatus, marriage, personal struggles, Mona Lisa EP and The Karma Trilogy[]

On January 1, 2005, Ariana surprise-released her fifth studio album, Get On The Dance Floor, as a New Year's gift to her fans. The album mainly consisted of an EDM, dance-pop, electropop and nu-disco sound. Ariana then embarked on The Dance Floor Sessions throughout 2005 to promote the album. While on tour, Ariana had begun writing songs for her sixth album, and recorded a few with her live band and on the tour bus. In March 2005, Ariana reprised her role as Rachel Keller in The Ring Two. After about eight months of dating, Ariana and Tito married in April 2005 at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas. Although her mother Rachel was supportive of the marriage, her father Bryan was convinced that Tito was just using her to get money out of her. Shortly after they married, a reality show starring the couple titled Can You Handle My Truth? premiered on May 17, 2005. The series chronicled the stages of their relationship, from their meeting to their marriage, while also showcasing footage of Ariana on tour.

Throughout 2005 and 2006, Ariana served as a co-writer and producer on fellow artist Miss Red's fourth and fifth studio studio albums, BLIX and RENACIMIENTO, which were released on January 12, 2007 and March 3, 2007, respectively. They also collaborated on a song from the RENACIMIENTO album titled "Tyrant". In August 2005, Ariana's relationship with her father had started to grow weak, as she had recently found out that he had been domestically abusing her mother and her younger siblings, Kelly, Emily and Chad (aged 14, 6 and 16 at the time, respectively), since their divorce two years earlier. Three months later, in November, Ariana announced two things: that her sixth album would be released in April 2006, and that she was currently pregnant with her first child. That same month, she released her first remix compilation, Fenty In The Mix: The Remixes, which consisted of 11 remixes.

In January 2006, Ariana's parents were involved in a serious car accident, which resulted in Ariana's mother slipping into a three-week coma. Ariana and her siblings were not in the car when the accident occurred. Her father was charged with a DUI after alcohol was found in the car, and spent about a week in jail after Ariana reluctantly bailed him out. This event hit Ariana hard emotionally, as she was very close to her mother. She constantly visited her in the hospital, and Tito & many of Ariana's fellow artists comforted her during this time. During one visit at the hospital, Ariana’s father also came to visit. Spectators and the hospital staff described that Ariana looked very uncomfortable being near her father, adding that a heated argument between the two ensued in the hallway, resulting in Ariana sustaining minor injuries after he had hit her multiple times and tried to strike her with a chair. Her father was heard claiming, in a slurred speech due to alcoholic effect, that Ariana was "responsible for everything that went on in Rachel's life" and that she "never loved [her] family". A court battle began in late February a week after her mother woke up from the coma, in which Ariana and her mother fought against her father for custody rights of Rachel’s other children. After a month-long battle, they won the case and Rachel gained full custody of the children. Ariana later filed a restraining order against her father.

In March 2006, Ariana guest-starred on the Will & Grace episode, "Buy, Buy Baby" as closeted lesbian Amber-Louise. The same month, an eight-track EP, titled Mona Lisa, was released on March 30, 2006, as a prelude to her upcoming sixth album. The EP was named after what Ariana considered her alter-ego at the time when she "needed to get things done". Notable highlights were the songs, “Sweet Dreams My L.A Ex” and “Look Who’s Talking Now”, which were written as response songs to her former boyfriend, Chase Roberts, after he had started trash-talking her and had dropped a song called “Cry Me A River” a few months after they broke up in early 2002, while also casting a blonde girl that was meant to resemble her in the music video. The following month, on April 12, 2006, she dropped her sixth album, titled I Am.. The Original Doll. It was a two-disc album that reflected the two sides of her personality; Ariana the person, and Ariana the pop star. Disc 1 featured ballads and mid-tempo tracks. Two of the songs on this disc, “Confessions Of A Broken Heart (Daughter To Father)” and “My Innocence”, were written about her father while the family drama was occurring. Another song, “Someday (I Will Understand)”, was written while she was still pregnant with her first child, with Ariana dedicating the song to her soon-to-be. Disc 2 featured uptempo dance tracks that talked about fame, escapism from modern life, sexual desire, religion and resilience. The album was met with universal acclaim, with critics praising Ariana’s vocals and the lyrical content. The album debuted at #1 on the UVboard 200 and stayed there for an impressive sixteen weeks. On May 2, 2006, Ariana and Tito welcomed their first child, a daughter whom they named Alicia. A few months later, in July, it was announced that Ariana would be headlining the 2007 Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival, which would take place in April.

In October 2006, Ariana was the subject of major controversy after Angelina Noel, a fellow artist of hers, began spilling stories to TMZ that Ariana had stolen Tito from her, claiming that she and him had were soon to be engaged at the time that he and Ariana met and that Ariana had "walked into [their] relationship and ruined the whole thing". Tito denied these claims, stating that he and Angelina had actually broken up months before he and Ariana started dating. On top of that, Chase Roberts' wife, Rebecca, started leaking clips of a 2002 phone call between Chase and Ariana over the release of "Cry Me A River", seemingly showing that Ariana had consented to the release of the song and its music video. As a result, critics began calling Ariana "fake", a "homewrecker" and a "calculated manipulator". Others called her a "snake", a term which stuck for a while. #ArianaFentyIsOverParty was the #1 trending hashtag on Twitter at the time. Despite all the negativity, Ariana remained strong and stood her ground. On December 10, 2006, Ariana welcomed her second child, a son named Sean.

In mid January 2007, the whole situation just got worse when Ariana's own father claimed that the rumors were true, although he was under alcoholic influence when he said this. A week later, he showed up to Ariana's house, bringing Angelina and Rebecca with him, which violated the restraining order that Ariana had filed against him months ago. Ariana's mother and siblings were at the house when this happened. Kelly, Ariana's sister, later described that "all hell broke loose in a matter of minutes", and a violent physical altercation ensued. It resulted in Ariana having to spend two weeks in the hospital for injuries, and her father & the two other girls being arrested; the former sentenced to five years in jail, and the latter sentenced to ten weeks of community service. The pressure had gotten so intense to the point that, in early February 2007, Ariana temporarily admitted herself into the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, and was released four days later. Ariana had planned to drop out of Coachella after the events that had occurred, but the event organizers convinced her to stay onboard.

On April 29, 2007, the day of her headlining set at Coachella, Ariana initially refused to go on stage, after it was reported that some in the crowd were booing and that some people had walked out of the show. However, after some encouragement from Tito, her band and her dancers, she changed her mind and performed her set. At the end of her set, Ariana announced that I Am.. The Original Doll was actually the first album in an album trilogy known as The Karma Trilogy, and that the next two albums in the trilogy would be released in the summer. In May 2007, Ariana performed at Sunbow Revue in Japan, her first performance in the country since The Dance Floor Sessions two years earlier. Before her set, she and Miss Red had an argument, causing her to punch Red in the face. Ariana was put in headlock after her performance, and subsequently they were both arrested and soon bailed out together by an angry Taylor Price, due to assaulting each other after and before the set, causing a beef that nearly caused Miss Red to be kicked off Blackout, though Taylor convinced her to let her stay. She and Miss Red soon reconciled, as they were mad at other things and not each other. A month later, on June 22, 2007, Ariana released her seventh album, Blackout, as the second album in the trilogy. She described the album as a "summer album... one that you could blast at a party or in your car while driving". The album debuted at #1 on the UVboard 200 and stayed there for ten consecutive weeks. The next week, Ariana posted a cryptic snake video on Twitter as a way of introducing the final album of the trilogy. Her eighth album, Reputation, was released on July 5, 2007, and also debuted at #1 on the UVboard 200, staying there for five weeks. She also released her second collaboration with Miss Red, "the boy is mine", which appeared on her sixth studio album, helpless against venus, released on July 25, 2007. Subsequently, she also served as a co-writer and producer on the album.
